MCB2000C Microbiology- Emerging Infectious Diseases of Humans

Task

Emerging Infectious Diseases of Humans

A pathogen is a biological agent that causes illness or disease to its host.

Emerging means newly discovered or newly appearing in humans or newly appearing in a distinctly different geographic area.

Therefore, Emerging Pathogens or Emerging Infectious Diseases are those which have been discovered recently, within the last 10-30 years.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines an emerging disease as “one that has appeared in a population for the first time, or that may have existed previously but is rapidly increasing in incidence or geographic range.”

This week, we will examine some emerging pathogens and diseases!

For your main discussion post (first post),

A. You must choose from among the emerging human pathogens below.
B. It is required of all students to reserve their discussion topic using the following procedure:
  • Click Week 3 Discussion, above, to enter the Discussion.
  • Click Create Thread and type the number and scientific name of the organism you will discuss in the subject line to reserve your topic on a first come/first serve basis according to the classroom date/time stamp. Repeat main posts on the same organism are not permitted.
C. To post your main discussion you will  Reply to your topic intent post.

Please choose one of the following emerging human pathogens for your main discussion:
1. Acanthamoeba polyphaga
2. Anaplasma phagocytophilium and Ehrlichia species
3. Australian Bat Lyssavirus
4. Bacillus anthracis
5. Bartonella henselae
6. Candida auris
7. Chikungunya Virus
8. Clostridium difficile

D. You must discuss your chosen human pathogen to tell us what type of microbe it is, what disease it causes, how the disease is emerging, signs & symptoms, course of disease, treatment and prevention.

E. Your  discussion should be well-written, in your own words, paraphrasing from only credible academic sources. You may not directly quote from your sources, minimum elaboration on the topic of a minimum of 300 words and maximum of 400 words.

F. You must also cite your credible academic reference sources with parenthetical in text citations, and provide full end ref information in APA 7th Edition format.

G. Due by 11:59PM ET Friday, on any day of the week other than the days you post your two comments, to meet the minimum three day posting requirement.
For your second post:

i. You will respond to another classmate with a substantive comment to move the science discussion forward in an area you are interested in after reading the main discussion.

ii. Again, you should provide student original writing, paraphrasing from credible sources, cite your source for this post in text in parentheses, and provide full end ref information in APA 7th Edition format.

iii. Due by 11:59PM ET Saturday, on any day of the week other than the day you posted your main discussion and second comment, to meet the minimum three day posting requirement.

For your third post:

a. You will respond to another classmate with a substantive comment to move the science discussion forward in an area you are interested in after reading the main discussion.
b. Again, you should provide student original writing, paraphrasing from credible sources, cite your source for this post in text, in parentheses, and provide full end ref information in APA 7th Edition format.
c. Due by 11:59PM ET Sunday, on any day of the week other than the day you posted your main discussion and first comment, to meet the minimum three day posting requirement.
