Aged care or the elderly population is often vulnerable to certain medical and health
conditions. Mental health is one of the crucial health priorities for the nation and the elderly
population. A high risk of infirmity, early death, and causality in the elderly population is
created by mental health disorders (Parkar, 2015).
The elderly population is at risk of developing certain mental health issues over time.
They are highly impacted by the biological factors which interfere with the functioning of
their brain, emotional disorders which lead to anxiety, change in sleeping patterns, and social
deviations which lead to the feeling of worthlessness and isolation (Parkar, 2015). It hampers
their ability to perform routine tasks like physical activities diminishing their quality of life
and independence. The general condition that can be often observed in aged care people
related to mental health are depression, anxiety, mood swings, and serious cognitive
impairments (De Mendon çaLima & Ivbijaro, 2013) .This health condition is apriority for
aged care as they generally ignore their mental health considering itan ordinary phase of
aging. Several elderly people consider mental ailments as asign of weakness and are not
ready to confess the problems faced by them. They resist contacting mental health services
because of prevalent stigmas and lack of availability and access to mental health resources.
The early diagnosis and identification of common mental disorders in old age is
important to prevent any disability and suffering. The relevant skills and sensitivity are
required for the care of the elderly population to regulate the possible level of well-being and
treatment. They are at an increased risk of developing physical infirmities, social isolation, a
sense of worthlessness, and early casualties (Priester, et al., 2016). The diagnosis of dementia,
bipolar disorder, and substance abuse require different approaches and specific treatments.
Identification of vulnerabilities and needs of the elderly population is essential to ensure good
mental health and improve the outcomes of the treatment.
Good mental health is crucial in every aspect of life. It is not only important for
efficient personal life but also plays amajor role in professional life. Poor mental health
hampers the productivity of an employee at the workplace. Frustration, anxiety, and
depression are common mental health problems observed in aged employees in the workplace.
The increase in medical expenses, absenteeism, and poor work performance are the outcomes
of bad mental health (Bubonya, Cobb-Clark & Wooden, 2017) .Thus, employers should focus
on prioritizing the mental health of their staff and employees at the workplace.
At my workplace, itis ensured that the old age employees receive frequent breaks and
relaxations during working hours. The employers provide them with the facilities of medical
leaves and medical expenses. The working hours for aged employees are less as compared to
youths in our organization. The work environment is safe and not discriminatory against the
aged care employees as we have no discrimination policy for the better treatment of these
employees at our organization (LaMontagne, et al., 2014) .The weekly or monthly body
check-ups are done for the diagnosis of mental health and physical health disorders.
Managers at all levels are obliged to take relevant steps and implement action plans to
minimize mental illness at the workplace.
